Science Project Hint #5

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like school and science project season are just around the corner! So we’re going to add a few more “things to think about before you start your science project” hints this month. Today’s hint is all about budgeting. Budgeting, for a science project? Yup, I’m afraid so.

Okay, so now we know we need to budget. Where do we start? Let’s start with another question of course! How much do you (or your parents) want to, or are able to, shell out for your project? Keep in mind that a great project can be done with minimal cash. But some science materials can also be a bit pricey, so pick your project carefully. The best thing to do is to determine a spending limit before you start. Then you need to write out a quick budget for each science project you have in mind. This can be a list or you can write it up as a table. You need to consider the cost of the materials for the experiment but that’s not all. What other hidden costs are lurking in your project? Display costs! You will have to budget the cost of a backboard, paper, markers, tape, glue, and whatever art supplies you need. Plus, if you are going to create special props, like a model of a planet for example, you’ll have to budget for that as well. So add up all those potential bills and see if the project is one that won’t drain your bank account before you start! Sounds pretty dull, I know, but it will save you a lot of hassle later. Check out prices on the Net or take your pad and paper to the nearest store that has what you need. One last hint, try to see if you can borrow any of the supplies or display materials that you need. You may be able to use materials or equipment from a high school science classroom. Or maybe your artistic best friend has treasure trove of markers and art supplies you can dip into.
